Lion Dragon Boat Club (Mixed) - No longer recruiting

Competitiveness level: 5 out of 5

Training: Monday and Wednesday from 6pm - 8pm

About Us: As one of the longest standing Dragon Boat teams in NZ with over 35 years in the sport, we welcome athletes of all backgrounds and abilities. True to our name we embrace the wairua (spirit) of the lion and are fierce competitors. The name Lion is deeply rooted in the days when the team was made up of employees of the Lion Breweries company. Nowadays, we're a group of people from all walks of life and professions.
Our Head Coach Sooupu Perese however, still works for Lion and has been with the club since its beginnings.

Why Us: We live by the values of whanaungatanga – family, kotahitanga – togetherness and awhinatia – supportiveness. Our racing teams are built on an ethos of competitive excellence. If you're someone that likes pushing yourself and being part of a team that wins races, then we're the club you've been looking for! Many of our club members go on to represent the Auckland region and Aotearoa - NZ in our wonderful sport!! But we're not just about hard work - fun and positive connections are also at the heart of who we are.

Steel Dragons Club

Competitiveness: 5 out 5 but also 6 out of 5 on the fun level

Training: Both teams train on Monday & Wednesday Mixed 6pm, Womens 7pm

About the club: As a club, Steel is fairly young. Formed in 2019, we became Incorporated in 2020. Originally formed as a competitive mixed team, we have evolved and added a Womens Team (Women of Steel) in 2021. Since our inception we have competed hard and often across the motu. From Ashburton to all over the North Island and even overseas. Along the way we have had some pretty successful results. Last year our Women qualified for the Club Crews World Championships and have just returned from Italy ranked amongst the best 10 teams in the world. The club is aiming to build on that success as we look to a successful season ahead.

Values: Steel is a club built on strong cultural & whanau values. With strong roots in Maori and Pasifika culture, but with a diverse, multicultural team, our people are at the centre of everything we do. We begin and end every regatta in karakia to give thanks. While competing hard, we also have an open door policy to recruitment and take people of all ages and experience levels. We help new paddlers to develop and at the same time, encourage our senior paddlers to become representative paddlers. Last season we had over 24 members of the club in the Auckland reps program and 3 of our members were selected to the NZ team that went to the World Champs in 2023. If you're looking for a club where you can have a bit of fun but also compete at the top level, Steel is the club for you.
