The essential role of the sweep
You might not always see them, but the sweep (also known as the steersman or helmsman) plays an important role in every training and race. As a paddlers, you're focused on driving the boat forward, but behind you, the sweep is constantly reading the water, adjusting for currents and wind, and ensuring the boat stays on course. While they don’t always get the recognition, they’re the ones who can make all the difference when things go wrong.
What makes a sweep great?
A skilled sweep has a keen understanding of the water, and knows how to keep the boat balanced, especially when paddlers are spread unevenly across the boat. They’ll shift their own position or adjust the boat’s direction without tiring the crew, all while maintaining speed. Their ability to read the start line and line the boat up correctly (without causing unnecessary movement) is vital, saving the paddlers from extra effort before the race even begins.
In longer races, particularly the 2km race, a sweep’s tactical decisions during turns can change the outcome. Whether making a sharp turn or managing the boat’s speed, sweeps are the strategic masterminds behind every move on the water.
Beyond the tactical side, sweeps are ultimately responsible for the safety of the boat and crew. They’re making decisions in real-time to ensure everyone stays safe while pushing for victory. It’s a tough job, but one that’s crucial for the team’s success.
With their Level 3 certifications, these new sweeps are ready to lead their crews at the National Championships in Lake Karapiro on 4-5th April.
